Fertilizer Value Chain Competitiveness Progress Report Document

The Commission produced an evidence-based Fertilizer Value Chain Competitiveness Report in 2022, which outlined challenges and proffered appropriate areas of intervention to improve production efficiency, expand industrial base, promote import substitution and economic growth & development. The report benefitted from benchmarking with some of the top fertilizer producing countries in Africa, which include Nigeria, South Africa and Morocco.

The fertilizer value chain is prioritised under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), as a key enabler to improved agriculture growth, as it is critical in enhancing agro-processing industry in Zimbabwe.

Leather Value Chain Competitiveness Progress Report – June 2024

The Commission continued to follow up on progress towards implementation of recommendations proposed in the Leather Value Chain Competitiveness Report, which was published in May2023. This report is a follow up to the sector’s first progress update that was published in December 2023.

During the 2024 first half, the sector prioritised establishment of a lasts and soles manufacturing plant and improving leather & leather products quality through trainings of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), among others.

This is in line with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) thrust on the need to improve the performance of the sector through value addition.

The National Competitiveness Commission produced an evidence-based Leather Value Chain Competitiveness Report in 2023, in an effort to facilitate the development of a sustainable competitive leather sector in Zimbabwe. This is in line with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) objective of the need to promote local production and domesticate value chains to reduce the import bill, ensure food security and job creation.

2022 Zimbabwe Competitiveness Report

In line with its mandate to produce annually benchmarked competitiveness reports, the National Competitiveness Commission (NCC) produced its inaugural Zimbabwe Competitiveness Report (ZCR) in 2021 to achieve the objectives of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

The Report mainly adopted the annual World Economic Forum – Global Competitiveness Index (WEF – GCI) and the World Bank Doing Business Indicators in assessing competitiveness and the implications of the same on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), international trade and economic growth, while noting the limitations inherent in the
methodologies used.

International Benchmarking Report on IMD – June 2023

The Institute for Management Development (IMD) published its 2023 World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) on 20 June 2023. The IMD Competitiveness Yearbook assesses and ranks 64 economies around the world based on their ability to create and maintain a competitive business environment. The rankings are based on more than 336 indicators, of which, 164 are ‘hard’ quantitative data, while 92 are based on ‘soft’ data; and qualitative data from a survey of business executives coordinated by the IMD’s Partner Institutes in various countries.

The National Competitiveness Commission produced Sugar Value Chain Competitiveness Report in 2021. The Sugar Value Chain Competitiveness Report was produced in line with one of the Commission’s functions of facilitating the development of sustainable evidence-based value chains, which is key in enhancing the country’s global competitiveness and domestication of existing value chains as espoused in the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
